Fenton Chess Club have been members of the North Staffs & District Chess Association since 1994 when the club was founded. The club was initially based at the Angel Inn in Fenton and were known as the Angel Chess Club. In 2002 we moved to the Foley Arms in Fenton and became known as Foley Chess Club. In 2004 we moved to the New Penny Inn in Goldenhill Road, where we stayed until 2007, and became the Fenton Chess Club we know today. Several brief changes of venue ensued over the next few years, the most notable being the Fenton Sports & Social Club in April 2010. The Fenton Sports & Social Club was later re-branded as the Tramways Community Club but, following a decline in membership and income, it closed it's doors in February 2013 and the Chess Club moved out of Fenton for the first time to the Longton Working Mens Club. Unfortunately that only lasted for one season before they suffered the same fate as the Fenton Sports & Social Club. Fortunately we were able to find a new home very quickly just a quarter of a mile down the road at the Florence Tennis & Bowling Club. Unfortunately, this venue proved to be unsuitable due to the noise, but we were then very lucky to find what has turned out to be the best venue in the League - the Tollgate Hotel in Blurton, which is where you will find us today.

In the early years of the club's existence we had very little playing success but since the mid-2000's we have been one of the most successful clubs in the lower divisions of the NSDCA League, winning Division 3 three times since 2003/2004, Division 4 on six occasions since 2008/2009 and Division 5 in 2009/10. In 2016/2017 we reached new heights - winning Division 2 for the first time in our history.

In 2006/2007 we won the NSDCA Rapidplay League.

In 2006 we were voted Staffordshire Club Of The Year.

In 2007/2008 we won the NSDCA Intermediate Cup.

In 2012/2013 we won the NSDCA Perry Trophy.

We have also proved successful in County Cup competitions, winning the Withnall Trophy in 2006/2007 and 2008/2009 and the Jackson Trophy in 2011/2012.

In 2011 we won the U130 Section at the Newcastle Rapidplay Jamboree.

In 2013 we were joint winners, with Holmes Chapel, of the U130 Section at the Newcastle Rapidplay Jamboree

In 2011/2012 we entered the National Minor Club Championship for the first time and reached the Final, where we were beaten on board count by Forest Of Dean from the North Gloucestershire League following a 2 - 2 draw.

In 2012/2013 we again reached the National Minor Club Championship Final where we were beaten 3 - 1 by Louth from the Lincolnshire League.
